International Mother Language Day

21.02.2020

International Mother Language Day is celebrated every year on 21 February. On this day in 1952, four young students were killed in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, because of Bengali and Urdu language controversies. The purpose of the day is to remember this sad incident and to promote the awareness of language and cultural diversity all across the world.

In Bangladesh, this day is a national holiday and people go to monuments to sprinkle flowers in memory of the victims. Our Team from Austria who are currently visiting Bangladesh, were invited by our volunteers to take part in the celebrations and honour the Bengali language.
